Verizon giving the 'X' to old Blackberry devices

As you can see from the picture, under the category Verizon cleverly calls the "End of Life Devices", you'll see four popular Blackberry devices listed.  According to this list, the 8230 Pearl Flip, 8330 Curve, 8830 Curve, and Storm 9530 will have limited or no remaining shipment from the vendor.  This essentially means they are being discontinued and being replaced by their bigger and better models that are already at Verizon, or that will be released in the coming months.  Stay tuned for more.

Oversized Nintendo DSi XL coming to North America in March

That's right folk.  The Nintendo DSi XL (AKA Dsi LL in Japan) is set to hit store shelves March 28th in North America at a retail price of $199.00.  Although the device is a bit thicker than the DSi, you get two massive 4.2 LCD screen in return to enhance your gameplay.  At launch, it will be available in bronze and burgundy colors.  Every device is also stocked with two DSiWare BrainAge games, DSi browser, Photoclock, and Flipnote Studio.

Note: European release date is March 5th!

Motorola Droid In-Depth Review

Motorola Devour slated to release this week! (Video)

The Motorola Devour is being released this week, with prices as low as $99 at Best Buy.  This is Motorola's latest android device, and it also features Motorola's Moto Blur interface.  Based on the video and everything I've been reading about the device, it seems to be centralized around social neworking (Facebook, Twitter, etc).  I'm not too sure how this device is going to compete with the likes of the Droid, but I'm sure this will be useful for lovers of social networking or those looking to switch over to an android OS at less the cost than the Droid.  Video below via YouTube.

Acer Liquid e finds a home at Rogers

It seems that Canada will see its first Android 2.1 very soon.  Acer's Liquid e has found a home with wireless carrier Rogers and that it will be available sometime this Spring.  No official release date or pricing has been announced as of yet, but more information should be available soon.  Keep in mind U.S. Acer fans that this device will be able to be unlocked and used on AT&T's 3G network.

Apple maintains Flash-free stance with iPad

Despite criticism from Adobe, Apple is sticking to their guns on their stance towards the iPad not having Flash support.  Adobe has developed Flash version 10.1 for certain mobile platforms, including Windows Mobile, Adroid, and Palm's WebOS.  With this development, Adobe is sparking more and more interest in the prospect of having Flash integration on mobile devices, but certainly not from Apple.


Both sides of the argument have valid points; Apple's iPhone was and is still extremely successful, and it has never had Flash support.  Adobe's argument is that by limiting the iPad by having no Flash support, it cuts off users from a lot of content on the web, and I have to agree.  Today Flash is used in a variety of ways on the net; games, videos, and even entire websites.  By not supporting it, the iPad browser may leave users disappointed and wanting more.


On top of this, Apple's iPad is a completely different device than the iPhone.  It was built for a target market, which may or may not yield a profitable.  The tablet device hasn't caught on just yet, and maybe never will, but Apple is definitely hurting it's chances by limiting it's browser by not including support for Flash.

Skype coming to Verizon Wireless devices

This past week, Verizon Wireless and Skype announced a partnership this past week to bring the internet-calling company to a number of the wireless companies 3G Blackberry and Android phones starting in March.  The following are phones that will have Skype capability: RIM's BlackBerry Storm 9530, Storm2 9550, Curve 8330, Curve 8530, 8830 World Edition, and Tour 9630 and Motorola's Droid, Eris, and Devour. 


This is service will be available with a data plan, which will allow Skype to Skype calling free and low rates to international landlines and cell phones. The best feature of this deal is that Skype will always be running in the background, meaning that no matter where you are you can always receive Skype calls and messages from your phone. Skype is also available on iPhone, however you can only access it through a Wi-Fi connection for now.

Apple's Browser Dilemma

Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch could soon have a new web browser; Norwegian software maker Opera said it has created version of its mobile browser that is compatable with Apples handheld devices. Currently the only browser for the iPhone and iPod Touch is Safari, but if Apple says agree to Opera, this would open the door for other software companies to try and feature their browser on the device as well. 

Opera says they've taken steps to ensure that the application meets App Store standards on quality, safety, looks, and other criteria. Despite this, seeing this browser make it into the App Store may be wishful thinking. A competitive alternative to any built-in Apple application generally doesn't sit well with the company. It's for this reason that there's a good chance they may reject the Opera Mini browser when it is finally submitted for approval into the store.

Moto Droid to get Flash 10.1 support

I'm sure this isn't the first time you've heard someone talk about the Motorola Droid getting Flash support, but this time it's the real deal.  The folks over at Android Central are at the MWC 2010 in Barcelona, and the Adobe people have confirmed that Flash support will indeed be coming to the Droid, they just won't tell us when.  Not only this, but they got their hands on a Droid actually running Flash.


At first look, it was actually shocking to see a mobile device running a flash application as it would on a web browser.  As I kept watching though, I knew there was still much work to be done.  The touch controls were very shaky, and the performance was O.K. at best.  No wonder Adobe wouldn't give them a release date.  They probably don't even have one themselves.  Saying this, Flash support on the Droid is indeed a reality and in working order.  Sure there are some kinks to work out, but hey, that's what they pay the guys over at Adobe for.  Link to Android Central's article below.

Droid Eris running Android 2.1?

By now, everyone knows that both the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris are getting the Android 2.1 update, but as of now there is no official word of exactly when these updates will be administered to each advice.  Tell that to this Droid Eris, which you can see is running Android 2.1 allegedly from an OTA update.  Don't get too excited Eris owners, because this "update" allegedly wipes all your data and locks you out your Google account.  On top of that, it doesn't include HTC's SenseUI, which is one of the most anticipated aspects of the 2.1 update for the Eris.  

Did this device truly get the 2.1 update OTA due to some fluke or mishap on Verizon's part? We don't know for sure, but if I was an Eris owner, I would definitely backup my device just incase.

GDGTCITY is now live

Hey there Internet.  So this is it, the start of my very first blog.  Here's the rundown of what this blog is all about:


Basically I created this blog in order to inform you guys (the readers), on the latest and most interesting news on gadgets and everything else related to technology.  This includes pretty much everything you can think of; smartphones, music players, blu ray, DVD, TVs, computers, Macs...you get the point.  There will be all sorts of information on these items such as reviews, tips and tricks, as well as how-to's.


My job is to write interesting articles and create fun videos for you guys to watch, and hopefully catch your interest.  I also just started a YouTube channel (gdgtcity), so hopefully my videos there bring in some visitors!  My promise to you guys is work my hardest to do just that, and if all goes well you'll see that in the work I produce.  Until next time!
